Furnace installation

Furnaces are a fraction of the size they were in the past, and much more efficient. In fact, it’s likely that your new furnace won’t even have the same size rating as the old model, since these ratings have changed over the years.Homeowners way more conscientious about how much energy they consume, which manifests itself in higher insulation, better sealing of windows and doors, and higher R-value insulation. Many insist in Energy Star efficiency, even though the initial cost is higher.

OUR REVIEWS

heat pumps

A heat pump is a system that transfers heat by circulating a refrigerant substance through a compressor, which pumps the refrigerant between two heat exchanger coils. In one coil, the refrigerant is evaporated at low pressure and absorbs heat from its surroundings. The refrigerant is then compressed on the way to the other coil, where it condenses at high pressure. At this point, the heat that was absorbed earlier in the cycle is released.

The whole process can be reversed, making it possible to use the same system to both heat and cool a home.

Choosing a heating installation or replacement system

Should You Go Gas or Electric?

While the initial cost for a gas furnace is higher than an electric unit, natural gas is cheaper than electricity in the long term. An electric furnace is cheaper to purchase, but will cost more in electricity to operate. Most people who have access to natural gas choose natural gas appliances, including a furnace, over electric ones. However, in mild climates, electric furnaces are also very popular because they’re used for such a short period of time in winter.

The Heating Installation and Replacement Process

All heat systems regardless of whether they’re new or a replacement system should be calculated by the energy metric ACCA Manual J load calculations system. This will incorporate a variety of features in the home to calculate the size of the comfort unit required.

Here are some of the items which affect temperatures, and therefore the size of the replacement unit:

* Building size
* Building orientation
* Glass style and exposure
* Insulation values
* Duct leakage
* Perimeter tightness
* Internal loads

What temperature should my thermostat be set at in the winter for the best energy efficiency?

The recommended winter thermostat setting by the US Department of Energy is 68 degrees. But, better than that, a Smart thermostat such as Nest will help you program your thermostat based on your habits, and make it easy to program your HVAC system from anywhere. This type of control has a powerful impact on the amount of energy you use and the comfort of your home. When your house is empty, it doesn’t require heating. When you’re on your way home, you can turn the heat on. You can sleep in a cooler home, but set it to turn the system on right before you arise in the morning. It’s an excellent tool for anyone who is interested in energy economy.

What are dual fuel systems?

A dual fuel system is one which uses gas to heat the furnace and electricity to run the heat pump, thereby creating the most efficient model for the coldest days when the hear pump isn’t the best source of heating for the home. Primarily used in locations where the night time temperature drops below 35 degrees.

Should I close the heating registers in unused rooms?

Because of the way a heating and cooling system is designed, closing a vent won’t make the other rooms warmer. A system is always designed to heat all of the rooms in the house by creating a certain air flow. If a vent is closed, the air flow has to force its way out another way, which may create leaks in your system. So, keeping all of the vents open is a more natural way to heat the home and won’t cause leaks in the process.
